In ten words

Himalayan culture, cuisine, via twisty super-scenic roads. Top value.

Riding Level

Tight and twisty all-tarmac riding requires concentration and nerve, but no super skills. Some endurance needed on a couple of full riding days. Tarmac 99%; Dirt 1%

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 800km Shortest day: approx'100km Longest day: approx'150km 3 days travelling 9 days riding 3 off-bike days

Pillion Rating

Can be potholed and bumpy in places, but otherwise a nice two-up tour.

Accommodation & Meals

The accommodation is a mixed bag, due to what's available, but is always decent and in great venues. The food, if you like real Indian grub, is one of the tour's highlights. Included meals: all breakfasts. Otherwise food is extremely inexpensive.

Highlights

Colonial-era Shimla; stays in historical buildings; Hindu temples of Chamba; Buddhist culture at Rewalsar & McLoud Ganj; views of high, snow-capped mountains; relaxing in Manali; forests and hills; fine India food, with a Himalayan twist.

In ten words

Challenging, inspirational, diverse and incredibly scenic ride through 'Little Tibet'

Riding Level

The condition of the roads varies annually, but there is always a challenging element to this tour. Nerve needed for big roadside drop-offs. Tarmac: 75%; dirt 25% (varies according to winter and monsoon damage).

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 1100km Shortest day: 40km Longest day: 200km 3 days travelling 11 days riding 2 off-bike days

Pillion Rating

Depends on road condition, but one day can be pretty tough on passengers.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation is, on the whole, pretty decent and varies greatly over the route, from the rough and experiential, to nicer places. No shortage of surprises... Included meals: all breakfasts; 1 dinner. Food elsewhere is extremely inexpensive.

Highlights

Shimla's colonial past and bustling present; the ancient Hindu temple at Sarahan; camping in beautiful Sangla Valley (if we can get there); huge mountain views at Kalpa; mystical 1000-year-old monastery at Tabo; night in one of the world's highest villages; try out Tibetan-style living for a night; markets, mayhem, temples and great food in Manali; crazily-steep Jalori Pass.

In ten words

Gorgeous easy-going riding, places, food, wine and top accommodation.

Riding Level

s All paved roads, bar one or two drives. Generally we're on very quiet roads that are in very good condition. A real mix of cruising and twisty passes. Tarmac: 99%; dirt 1%.

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 2200km Shortest day: 125km Longest day: 420 (easy) km 2 days travelling 8 days riding 2 off-bike days

Pillion Rating

Superb tour for pillions and couples with smooth tarmac roads all the way and a support vehicle to carry luggage. Pillions can also rest in the Hilux if needed. Lots of short days allows for exploring, dining, swimming etc.

Accommodation & Meals

The accommodation is a minimum of three-star rated – which is pretty damn smart in SA. Super food and wine everywhere.

Highlights

The Cape coast, Cape Agulhas (most southerly point in Africa), Route 62, Addo Elephant Reserve, Langkloof, Cape Town... and many more. There just isn't the room here!

Ladakh & Zanskar - Ultimate Himalaya Tour

(India)

Pillion: £2200

In ten words

To the top of the world - and beyond. Perception-changing.

Riding Level

Roads have improved in recent years, but this tour visits the Suru and Zanskar valleys, whose roads are often unpaved. There are three fairly tough rides, probably with river crossings. Other high passes are likely to be rough at the tops. However, we have taken scores of people on such routes, so it is achievable to the average rider with a bit of teamwork and effort. Tarmac: 80%; dirt 20%.

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 1200km Shortest day: 50km Longest day: 230km 2 days travelling 7/8 days riding 2 off-bike days

Pillion Rating

s A challenging tour for pillions (and riders with pillions) in some places. Much of the route is smooth tarmac, but others are rough and sometimes rocky. However, if you're a bit of a hard-arse who must see these most remarkable places, then it' not impossible and the back-up truck is always there if you need a break.

Accommodation & Meals

The venues and views are five-star, but although the accommodation is the best we can find in the area, choice can be a little restricted on the edge of where it is possible for humans to exist. Food (mainly vegetarian) is simple, except in Leh, where the tourist industry is more developed. Included meals: all breakfasts; 1 dinner. Dining is extremely inexpensive.

Highlights

Some of the world's highest rideable passes. Lamayuru Monastery; the mind-boggling high mountain views in the Zanskar Valley; Zanskar monastery visit; the markets of Leh; Hill station at Dharmasala and oh so much.

In ten words

Great dirt/tarmac riding in a superb setting. Top value.

Riding Level

Most of the riding is fairly easy going, with some great twisty passes. There are a lot of graded dirt roads and one short tougher trail. Tarmac: 60%; dirt 40%.

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 2500km Shortest day: 150km Longest day: 475km 3 days travelling 7 days riding 1 off-bike day

Pillion Rating

On the whole, this tour is good for pillions. Mainly smooth dirt and tarmac roads, but the ride is a bit of a challenge in places.

Accommodation & Meals

This is a budget tour. All breakfasts and a couple of evening meals are included. If you're after fun, rather than four-star, this is for you. The food is cheap and good everywhere.

Highlights

The Cape coast, Cape Agulhas (most southerly point in Africa), Tradouw Pass, Route 62, Robinson Pass, Outiniqua Pass, Baviaanskloof, Addo Elephant Reserve, Langkloof, Prince Alfred's Pass, Seven Passes route.

In ten words

Some awesome, awesome road riding meets wildlife safaris and history.

Riding Level

It may be twisty, but the roads are generally smooth, with a few exceptions. The road into Swaziland can get messy for 20km, or so. Traffic is generally very light. Tarmac: 98%; dirt 2%.

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 3300km Shortest day: 150km Longest day: 520km 2 days travelling 10 days riding 2 off-bike days

Pillion Rating

Great tour for pillions. Mainly smooth roads, but a couple of fairly short rough sections and long days in the saddle. If rest is required, aircon 4X4 support vehicle is available.

Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation is generally in three-star hotels and guesthouses (which are of a high standard in SA). Food is western-style and cheap with huge portions. A carnivore's paradise, with seafood also plentiful. Included meals: all breakfasts; 1 dinner.

Highlights

Krugar National Park safari; riding the Long Tom Pass, Abel Erazmus Pass, Piggs Peak road, Swaziland vistas, night drive in St Lucia Wetlands Park (World Heritage Site); crocodile and hippo viewing; Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve; road to Port St Johns; Rourke's Drift visit; Drakensberg Mountains; Golden Gate National Park.

In ten words

Simply the best riding on the planet. Stunningly beautiful, too.

Riding Level

Lots and lots of corners need concentration; mainly good tar surfaces. Some long days. Sani Pass (steep dirt) can be tricky in the wet. Tarmac: 90%; dirt 10%.

The Adventure

Overall: approx' 3000km Shortest day: 150km Longest day: 450km 3 days travelling 10 days riding 1 off-bike day

Pillion Rating

Most of the route is just fine for passengers, but riders may struggle on Sani Pass, so passengers may choose to ride in the support vehicle (compulsory if wet). Generally smooth roads, nice accommodation, good views and food make for a winner.

Accommodation & Meals

An eclectic mix of stays, from four-star lodge to guest houses. Always clean, always a bar and good food everywhere.

Highlights

Some Garden Route; Sani Pass; Highest Pub in Africa; Maloti Mountains; Local Music; Katse Dam; Semonkong Falls; The Great Karoo desert; the surprises; the roads, oh the roads!
